North Carolina’s skies tell a powerful story — one of growth, innovation, and boundless opportunity in aviation and aerospace. Aviation isn’t just an industry here; it’s a driving force that fuels the economy, empowers communities, and inspires the next generation to dream beyond the clouds.
According to the 2025 State of Aviation Report from NCDOT, North Carolina’s 72 public airports generate:
- $88 billion annually – nearly 11% of the state’s GDP
- More than 427,000 jobs
- $34 billion in personal income
- $4.8 billion in state and local tax revenues
That’s a return of over $500 in economic output for every $1 invested by the state. Clearly, aviation in North Carolina is more than transportation—it’s an engine of growth and innovation.
Aviation Education: Building North Carolina’s Talent Pipeline
At the heart of this success story lies a focus on aviation education and workforce development. The state has built one of the strongest aviation talent pipelines in the nation, including:
- 4 universities offering aviation-related bachelor’s degrees or higher, including NC State (Aerospace Engineering), Elizabeth City State University (Aviation Science), and the University of Mount Olive (Aviation & Business Management).
- 7 community colleges and a private training college offering associate degrees, diplomas, and certifications, including Guilford Technical Community College
- 50 flight schools statewide, offering training for pilots, drone operators, and aviation technicians, including Triad Aviation Academy and Cape Fear Aviation Flight Training.
With this robust educational foundation, students can see clear pathways from classroom learning to high-demand aviation careers.
Education is Our Runway: The Aero Experience
Education isn’t just about books and lectures—it’s about hands-on opportunities that make aviation tangible and exciting. From seeing electric aircraft charging on the tarmac to drones supporting agriculture and logistics, students get a glimpse of what’s possible.
That’s why the Aero Experience, founded by 2MQ Consulting and Black Women in Aviation, was created. This immersive program bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world aviation careers by connecting students with:
- Aviation professionals and mentors
- Cutting-edge aerospace technology
- Interactive, gamified learning experiences

Upcoming Event: October 2025 in Raleigh
The inaugural Aero Experience event takes off in Raleigh, North Carolina, on October 23, 2025. Aimed at middle and high school students, this hands-on event combines technology, mentorship, and career exploration to spark curiosity and inspire future aviation leaders.
